Hampshire - provincial backwater or the place to be?
Hampshire itself is the third largest shire county in England, and includes a wide variety of towns, cities and villages, all set in beautiful countryside. The main areas for work are around Portsmouth, Southampton, Basingstoke, Aldershot, Winchester and Andover.
Law firms range from large offices of regional firms through to smaller high street practices and specialist LSC funded firms dealing solely with crime and family law etc.. There remain a large number of traditional firms with 2-5 partners on high streets in smaller towns and suburbs, and some growth in the more modern industrial park practice types.
We have found in recent years a large number of conveyancing posts, personal injury positions (almost all down to expansion by a small number of firms), commercial property, the usual range of commercial fields including construction, general company commercial and PFI, crime and family law.
In the Christmas recruitment period of 2004 a large number of redundancies appeared to take place in and around Hampshire, which meant that on the conveyancing front the market dried up. That has reset itself again and seems to be picking up.
