Legal Jobs

What is a Legal Job? The definition of a 'legal job'.

A legal job can be defined as a position of employment in a legal environment, whether this is a law firm, a firm of solicitors, a company of licensed conveyancers, a government organisation, an NGO or charity, a set of barristers chambers, a local authority legal team or an in-house legal department.

There is often confusion as to "quasi-legal" jobs - working as a police officer, a court administrator, a post in a debt collection company or an administration post in the Insolvency Service. These posts are not "legal jobs" as such - they are "quasi-legal jobs" as there is some element of law but this is not the main part of the role.

Legal jobs can include posts for solicitors, legal executives, barristers, overseas lawyers, paralegals, fee earners, licensed conveyancers, legal secretaries, office managers, clerks, outdoor clerks, professional support lawyers (PSL), costs draftsmen and anyone else linked to the operation of a legal department or law firm.

The importance of the definition of a legal job is really only for potential lawyers looking for legal experience. Legal jobs are vital to get a foot in the door, but quasi-legal posts do not add as much value to your CV. If you are unable to get a legal job however, a quasi-legal job can make a lot of difference to your chances of success in getting work.

The definition of "legal job" does not include jobs that are 'legal' in the sense that they are not illegal!
